Understanding Gluten-Free Diet

More and more people are adopting a gluten-free diet, whether due to medical necessity, as in the case of celiac disease, or in search of a healthier lifestyle. But do you really know what gluten is and what the impacts of eliminating it from your diet are?

Gluten is a protein found in cereals such as wheat, rye, barley and derivatives. In people with celiac disease or non-celiac gluten sensitivity, the ingestion of this protein can cause adverse reactions, such as intestinal inflammation, abdominal pain and other symptoms. However, for those who do not have an intolerance, there is no solid evidence that eliminating gluten brings direct health benefits.

A gluten-free diet requires extra care when choosing foods, to ensure a balanced diet rich in nutrients. Naturally gluten-free foods, such as fruits, vegetables, legumes, meats, fish and grains such as rice and quinoa, should be the basis of this type of diet.

Remember: before starting any dietary change, it is essential to seek guidance from a nutritionist or specialized doctor.
